RYLA 25 Malta Peace Video Challenge

During the Rotary Zone 14 RYLA held in Malta between the 6th and 10th April 2025, the participants were randomly divided into groups to work together, in a live example of leadership at work, to plan, script, cast, film and edit a video about peace, leadership or Rotary.

Each group collaborated among themselves to prepare a short video on their mobile phones, and editing to produce their final creations. The output, which was of an amazing standard given the time constraints that each group was put under, is now being shared on social media as the group’s message of peace, leadership and Rotary.

The five videos are linked below:

  • Letter to Self - A moving film that follows the story of a young victim of the war in Ukraine writing a letter to his younger self giving a perspective and 'appreciation' of the effects of conflict on those who are literally caught in the crossfire.

  • Finding Rotary - Three young men looking for something; a purpose, connection, belonging. You may watch this video more than once to appreciate the subtle details. Will they find what they are looking for in the streets of Sliema, Malta?

  • Empathy - This film shows how something like a sound can mean different things to different people and teaches us to have empathy.

  • How can I serve my community and contribute to the realisation of peace? Answer: by joining Rotary or Rotaract. What is peace for you?

  • What is a moment of peace in your life? - Interviews undertaken by participants at the Rotary Youth Leadership event for Rotarians and Rotaractors from Italy and Malta held with passers-by in Sliema, Malta.

  • Plan it

It all begins with an idea for your peace video. Project your desires for peace building, or share your experiences, or the role of Rotary in peace building. You create your idea as a team.

Work as a group to plan your video. Negotiate the ideas you want to project, the script you would like to follow and cast the members of your group for the video.

The way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

  • Film it

Work together with your team to do the filming on your smartphone.

  • Edit it.

Back at the hotel, work together to edit your work into one coherent video that will be shown to all RYLA participants on Thursday.
